Person Centered Approaches

Per­son Cen­tered Prac­tices are the use of per­son cen­tered think­ing tools and skills to develop and imple­ment sup­ports for indi­vid­u­als served. Some agen­cies use a spe­cific set of tools that OTAC pro­vides train­ing on. Oth­ers may use sim­i­lar processes though they may call them dif­fer­ent terms.Some basic evi­dence that Per­son Cen­tered Prac­tices are being followed:

  • Person’s per­spec­tive is lis­tened to and honored
  • Indi­vid­u­als have a role in plan­ning the sup­ports they receive & the staff that are hired
  • Evi­dence of action in the ISP dri­ven by person’s perspective
  • Daily learn­ing is cap­tured to change the ISP
  • Reg­u­larly look at people’s lives to see what is work­ing and not working
  • Employ­ees know their roles and respon­si­bil­i­ties in sup­port­ing people
  • Staff are matched with peo­ple based on skill and com­mon interests
